Mini-Rant: ORB

                (/rant)

I absolutely despise it when people use the word ‘orb’ as a synonym for ‘eye’.

Example: “His gentle emerald orbs stared at me.”

I know that it’s in the dictionary and that that fact just about kills me, but I will never, EVER stoop to using it. It’s too dramatic, too romantic, too flowery when ‘eye’ could do just fine and not sound like some fourteen year old pining for a fictional character that will never (nor should) exist anywhere outside the realms of her own personal fantasies.
Here's lookin' at you, Schmeyer.

  1. I agree! So does my dad! Rah! ...How is an eye an orb anyway?

  2. I guess the eye is sorta roundish, and "orb" means "sphere"... but even if it does make literal sense, I still can't stand it! Lol.

  4. Eh, I've written that before. Of course, I was fifteen and stupid. Oh well.

  5. Random question: Would you be okay with it if there were actual orbs staring at you. Whether metaphorically or literally. Like an item come to life or two oddly colored necklace beads or something. But yeah, my mom bought me this huge book on common grammar and spelling issues and ever since I've been a little edgy about bad usage...

  6. Pet peeves. I understand that. Mine was "that big OF a deal." Drop the fri**in 'of!' Anyway, a good friend mine once said to me, "The beauty of language is that it evolves." And he is right. Muggle is in the dictionary now, right?
